About Matcha

The centuries-old art of preparing and consuming matcha is traditionally rooted in Zen Buddhist thought and practice. Characterised by its rich and well-rounded layers of umami, matcha is unique for its production process which includes shade growing and stone grounding the whole leaf. The resulting tea boasts of natural antioxidant qualities and it is heralded for its myriad health benefits. Matcha is typically enjoyed as part of the reflective experience of the traditional Japanese tea ceremony, but it is also widely celebrated as a versatile culinary ingredient.

About Ippodo Tea

With a rich history spanning three centuries, the renowned tea merchant Ippodo Tea Co. has been serving premium Japanese green tea in the ancient city of Kyoto since 1717. Located on the historic Teramachi street – just south of the Imperial palace, the family-owned business originated as a seller of Japanese tea and ceramics, and was later renamed by the imperial family as Ippodo: ‘the preserved one’. As one of Kyoto’s classic tea purveyors, Ippodo specializes in high-grade green tea cultivated in the reputed tea-making region of Uji in Kyoto. Ippodo’s continued mission is to uphold Japanese tea traditions and share the subtle pleasures of the art of Japanese green tea.
